FUNCTIONS

The Department of Education – Ministry of Education, Health, and Community Services delivers a range of appropriate educational services to the citizens of Montserrat on behalf of the Government.  To deliver the range of services across the community the Department of Education - MEHCS is organised into the following functional areas of delivery:

Early Childhood Education

Delivery of the early childhood programme for pre-school education.

 

 

Primary Education

Delivery of the primary education curriculum through primary schools in Montserrat.

 

 

Secondary Education

Delivery of the secondary education curriculum for students at the Montserrat Secondary School.

 

 

Post-Secondary Education

Delivery of technical, vocational, academic and professional education.

 

 

Special Needs

Providing specialist education programmes for the physically, mentally and emotionally challenged. 

 

 

Teacher Training

Developing and upgrading of the professional knowledge and skills of teachers at all levels and managing the teacher-training programme.

 

 

Education Support Services

Ensuring schools are adequately resourced and that all children irrespective of their socio-economic circumstances can take full advantage of the educational opportunities offered.

MISSION STATEMENT

 

Our mission is to make suitable provision for the intellectual, creative and emotional development of all of the citizens of Montserrat by enabling people to acquire academic, technical and social skills and build capabilities for self-directed and lifelong learning, which will contribute to personal and national development, and facilitate adjustment to an ever changing domestic, regional and global environment.

 

 

 

CORPORATE GOALS

 

The corporate goals reflect the priorities of Education and will lead towards the attainment of the vision and mission statement.  The Education corporate goals are generic, and therefore apply equally to all sub-areas within the Education portfolio. 

1.   To expand access and enhance equity in the education system.

2.  To raise student achievement by improving the quality of provision, and promoting student-centred learning strategies.

3.   To provide a skills base for the regeneration of Montserrat.

4.   To promote the development of healthy lifestyles and the values necessary for human and dignified living.

5.   To expand recreational, sports and cultural activities at all levels

6.   To strengthen partnerships and alliances between schools, parents, communities, and the public and private sectors.
